The valley in between, in which Þingvellir is contained, is the rift valley. You are welcome to walk alongside both of these plates. One of the park's most pleasant walks takes you between the edge of the North-American plate and an old part of the wall that collapsed away; this is called the Almannagjá gorge.
Learn MoreIt's an important location on the planet: when you swim into the mid-Atlantic ridge, you're actually swimming into the rift that separates
Learn MoreWhile most of this happens deep on the ocean floor, in Iceland, the ridge—a major tectonic plate boundary that sits between the North American
Learn MoreIn the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir in Iceland, there's a crack between two tectonic plates, filled with crystal clear glacial
Learn MoreThe Mid-Atlantic Ridge has a major impact on Iceland, not only because the ridge divides the country in two, but also because the ridge is
Learn MoreThe Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a submarine mountain range that extends north from Iceland to near the Antarctic Circle through the middle of the Atlantic. It separates the Atlantic Ocean into two large troughs each of which with a depth ranging from 12,100-18,000 ft (3,700-5,500 metres).
Learn MoreWhy is Iceland a portion of the mid-ocean ridge? Iceland represents the largest portion of the MAR exposed above sea level. Formed from volcanic eruptions on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, about 24 million years ago, it is one of the few places where you can stand on the ridge on dry land. This makes Iceland very special and a popular place for geologists and scientists.
Learn MoreThe ocean ridge rises up to between 4 km above the ocean floor. a rift valley at its crest marks the location at which the two plates are moving apart - hotter, less dense and more buoyant crust
Learn MoreThe bridge is a bit of a gimmick because the rift it spans is at the northern edge of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (which runs north-south under the Atlantic Ocean, but curves almost 90 degrees
Learn MoreThe Mid-Atlantic Ridge is in effect an immensely long mountain chain extending for about 10,000 miles (16,000 km) in a curving path from the Arctic Ocean to near the southern tip of Africa. The ridge is equidistant between the continents on either side of it. The mountains forming the ridge reach a width of 1,000 miles.
Learn MoreIceland is one of the most unique places in the world because you can snorkel between two continental tectonic plates.
Learn MoreThe Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) is known as a mid-ocean ridge, an underwater mountain system formed by plate tectonics. It is the result of a convergent plate boundary that runs from 87° N - about 333 km (207 mi) south of the North Pole - to 54 °S, just north of the coast of Antarctica.
Learn MoreReykjanes peninsula is located directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are moving apart. Iceland is the only place where the ridge is visible on land and it is possible to walk between the two tectonic plates.
Learn MoreThe Mid-Atlantic Ridge Iceland is situated atop the divergent boundary called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The Ridge runs through the center of Iceland, and much tectonic activity occurs because two plates, the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate, are pulling away from each other.
Learn MoreTIL that due to Iceland's location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North American and Eurasian Tectonic plates, the country it is technically part of both North America and Europe, and is the only place where you can walk between them.
Learn MoreThe western side of the Eurasian and eastern side of the North American tectonic plates form the northernmost part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which Iceland is located on. In a sense, it can be said that Iceland is a kind of bridge between continents due to this unique location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Learn MoreThis line of separation is called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and runs north to south in the western part of the country. In some sections you can walk right between
Learn MoreThe bridge was built as a symbol for the connection between Europe and North America. One can cross the continental divide on Leif the Lucky's Bridge and take home a personalised certificate at the Reykjanes information center and Reykjanes Geopark visitor center at Duus Cultural house . N63° 52' 5.558" W22° 40' 31.588". Get directions.
Learn MoreThe reason for this seismic activity is Iceland's location right on the divergent boundary between the Eurasian plate and the North American
Learn MoreIceland is the only place in the world that you can walk between two tectonic plates (there are a few other places in the country that you can do this as well). This is a pretty cool spot, and the bridge connecting both of the plates is a pretty neat concept. Worth going if
